Snorkeling at Cherry Creek for kids

Part of Water Wiser Kids outdoor series

Saturday, August 19, 2017 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Brodhead Watershed Association

There is a whole beautiful world to be enjoyed in the fresh water of Cherry Creek in Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Brittney Coleman, water educator at Kettle Creek Environmental Center, will lead a creek snorkeling expedition for children at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19.

With a creek snorkel, flotation device and guidance from Coleman, elementary-age kids and their families have a chance to enter a world that is as fascinating as a rain forest, see it up close and learn a little about the creatures who live there.

“You don’t have to go to some exotic tropical reef. Kids have a blast and learn a lot” right here while creek-snorkeling, Coleman says.

Along the way, kids will learn about which plants and critters in creeks can’t stand pollution, and why. They’ll hear about the food chain, from the tiny caddis fly to weasels and river otters. They’ll see sunlight in water from a fish’s perspective and find out what a fish’s life is like – all in the natural world of the Poconos.

The Water Wiser Kids program is hosted by Brodhead Watershed Association and Kettle Creek Environmental Center. The series is supported by a grant from the Dr. Claus Jordan Endowment Grant, part of the Lehigh Valley Health Network Pocono Foundation.
